Course Information

With a Coxswain - Restricted Certificate of Competency you are qualified to Master trading and fishing vessels subject to conditions noted on your certificate.

Courses are programmed on demand and delivered in suitable locations.

Learner Profile
This qualification is intended for people who have experience working as a deckhand on a vessel. Learners come with wide ranging levels of experience in the maritime industry. Some are mature age with extensive time working in the industry and others are younger with minimal experience.

Restricted Coxswain Certificate candidates must have 3 months seatime on a commercial vessel or 6 months seatime on a recreational vessel verified by the maritime regulatory authority.

This course leads to the awarding of a Restricted Coxswain Certificate by the maritime regulatory authority, which provides a career progression from deckhand level to a command position on a vessel.

This qualification requires a good command of spoken English, the capacity to read and interpret operational documentation and the ability to write at the level needed to competently record vessel operations.

This qualification requires the learner to have basic small vessel equipment operational skills.

Training Programme
The course content is delivered over 3 days with the written assessment at the end of day 3 and practical assessment taking place on day 4.

As well as receiving a Restricted Coxswain license from the Maritime Regulatory Authority, students will receive a statement of completion in the following nationally accredited units of competency:

To be eligible for the Restricted Coxswains course a student must:

Medical
Applicants must pass a medical and colour blindness test. They are restricted to working only daylight hours if they fo not pass the colour blindness test.

Age
Be 18 years old

Seatime
3 months (720 hours) commercial seatime OR 6 months (1440 hours) recreational seatime.
Pre-requisites:

  • A Senior First Aid Certificate must be held prior to the issuance of a Restricted Coxswain Certificate of Competency.

  • Total course cost of $330.00 includes exam fees and learning guides.
