Course Information
This qualification represents the base entry point into this sector of the seafood industry and provides people with a range of core and underpinning skills and knowledge relevant to work as a field hand in the aquaculture sector. Work at this level is usually undertaken under general supervision and follows routine processes and procedures.
There are no fornal entry requirements for this qualification, however all students must be at least 18 years of age.
To receive the Certificate II in Seafood Industry (Aquaculture) a student must successfully complete 19 units. The following rules apply when selecting units for this qualification:
- 4 common industry core units (Group A) plus
- 7 aquaculture specialist units (Group B) plus
- 8 elective units that may be selected from a combination of:
- Group B aquaculture specialist units not yet selected for this qualification;
- Group E elective units;
- Certificate I in Seafood Industry (Aquaculture) - maximum of 1 unit;
- Certificate III in Seafood Industry (Aquaculture) - maximum of 1 unit; and
- Certificate II level or higher, from this or any other Training Package - maximum of 2 units. Units must be relevant to workplace needs.
Learner Profile
This qualification is intended for people with little or no experience in the seafood industry. Learners will typically be young with an interest in entering into the aquaculture industry. No prior training or experience is required.
This qualification will give learners a general overview of the aquaculture industry and show employers that they have a genuine interest in the industry and are willing and able to participate in training for future advancement.
This qualification requires a general command of spoken English in order to verbally report to supervisor, the capacity to read simple written instructions, Standard Operating Procedures and enterprise procedures, the ability to write at the level needed to competently record data from weights and measurements and the ability to perform basic calculations.
This qualification requires only basic computer skills in order to use the CD-rom provided for the 4 core units of competency.
Duration of the Course:
This course is only delivered in Port Lincoln over a period of 3 months.
Week 1: Induction, 4 core units and Senior first aid.
Week 2: ESS and Apply deckhand skills.
Week 3: Apply deckhand skills continued and Forklift.
Week 4: Handle stock, Feed stock and Operate small vessels.
Week 5: Operate small vessel continued, Outboard motors and Network
Week 6: Network continued and Maintain farm structure maintenance.
Week 7: Harvest stock, On-farm post-harvest and Apply chemicals
Week 8: Hiab
Week 9: PADI
Week 10: Hand and power tools
Week 11: 4 day boating trip to aquaculture farm (Whyalla)
Weeks 12-13: Two weeks work experience at aquaculture facility.
