Certificate IV in Transport & Distribution (Coastal Maritime Operations - Master Class 4)

This certificate of competency entitles the holder to be in charge of a commercial trading vessel (Master 4) or commercial fishing vessel (Skipper 2) of less than 35 metres in length to Australian Coastal and Middle-water limits, or as a Chief mate of a vessel less than 80 metres in length to Australian Coastal and middle-water limits.

The programme contains competencies that can be undertaken separately, however, all specified competencies must be successfully completed to gain the Master 4 or Skipper 2 Certificate of Competency.

To be eligible for the Master Class 4/Skipper Grade 2 Certificate a student must:

  • be 20 years of age
  • hold a Certificate of Competency such as Master Class 5; Mate Class 4; Second Mate or other acceptable qualification
  • meet the eyesight and medical standards
  • have watchkeeping service acceptable to the authorit based upon set requirements
  • have satifactorily completed:
    • Elements of Shipboard Safety (ESS)
    • Senior First Aid
    • Marine Radio Operator's Certificate of Proficiency
  • have paid the appropriate fee to the relevant maritime authority

  • Elements of Shipboard Safety (Senior First Aid; Survival & Fire)
  • Marine Radio Operator's Certificate of Proficiency
