Certificate II in Transport & Distribution (Coastal Maritime Operations - Coxswain)

This Certificate of Competency entitles the holder to be in charge of a commercial vessel (fishing or trading) of less than 12 metres in length overall. The certificate is a dual purpose Skipper/Engineering qualification for people operating small vessels close to shore.

The Coxswain Certificate will generally be endorsed: "Valid for Inshore operations within 15 nautical miles to seaward to the coast or designated sheltered waters limits."

To be eligible for the Coxswains Certificate a student must:

  • be over the age of 18 years (proof must be provided)
  • be able to prove 12 months qualifying service on commercial or non-commercial vessels. Of this, not less than 3 months must be on vessels of less than 24 metres
  • pass an eyesight test for colour and vision
  • pass a medical examination
  • produce character and sobriety testimonials
  • have paid the appropriate fee to the relevant maritime authority.

Pre-requisites:

  • Elements of Shipboard Safety (Senior First Aid; Survival & Fire)
  • Radio Telephony
